Odafe Onyeka Okolie banged in four goals as Churchill Brothers trounced a hapless Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bangalore 7-0 at Yuba Bharati Krirangan (YBK) at Salt Lake on Wednesday to set up a Goan derby against Dempo SC in the semifinals of the 30th Federation Cup.In another Group B match, simultaneously played at Vidyasagar Krirangan at Barasat, Mahindra United registered a 4-2 win over Mohammadan Sporting but their victory was not enough as Churchill, with a better goal difference (8) made the last-four. With Churchill Brothers and Mahindra United locked on four points from Group B, their respective matches -- against HAL and Mohammaden Sporting -- were played simultaneously, as per the new set of rules. At Barasat, an intense battle was fought between the two sides, and till 10 minutes into the second-half, the jeepmen were coasting 4-0 and were coasting for the semis berth when news came in that Churchill made 5-0 against HAL as pressure caught of with the Derrick Perreira's boys at Barasat.Mohammadan Sporting then banged in two goals in the closing minutes to oust Mahindra United from the 16-team championship fought for the first time on a league-cum-knock out basis. The Group B toppers, Churchill Brothers will lock horns against I-League champions Dempo on December 18, for a place in the Federation Cup summit clash which will be held on December 21.Churchill drew the first blood in the fifth minute through Bineesh Balan, who went on to score a brace.Odafe began the rout with a 16th minute goal, while Ogba Kalu Nnanna made it 3-0 just a minute later. After the changeover, the floodgates again opened up for Churchill Brothers as Odafe scored his second in the 61st minute to see their side go 4-0 up. Four minutes later, Balan did the damage as HAL were shown no mercy at the Salt Lake Stadium.A penalty conversion by Odafe in the 81st minute took his personal tally to three goals, and the team's 6-0, as Churchill assured themselves for the semis berth. Just two minutes before the final whistle, Odafe made the scoreline 7-0.
At Barasat, Mahindra United dominated Mohammadan Sporting right from the start. In the 16th minute, Mohammadan received their first jolt when their ace defender Anit Ghosh brought down Manjit Singh to be awarded a free-kick.To add to their woes, Anit injured his right leg in the tussle and was ruled out from the defence line-up. That set the ball rolling for Mahindra who scored through the free-kick which was taken by Steven Dias from outside the penalty box. Chelsea completed a clean sweep for English teams in the Champions League group stage after beating Cluj 2-1 on Tuesday to join holders Manchester United , Arsenal and Liverpool in the last 16 of the competition. They were joined in the knockout phase by AS Roma after their 2-0 home defeat of Girondins Bordeaux and Panathinaikos, who won Group B with a 1-0 home victory against Cypriot rivals Anorthosis Famagusta.Didier Drogba scored his 19th Champions League goal for Chelsea to seal their passage and become the club's leading scorer in the competition, ahead of Frank Lampard who has 18. Salomon Kalou had given Chelsea a 40th-minute lead from close range at Stamford Bridge but it was substitute Drogba's incisive finish on 71 minutes that dispelled any fears of an early exit after Yssouf Kone had equalised.Chelsea finished as runners-up in Group A as Roma secured top spot after Matteo Brighi and Francesco Totti scored in the second half against Bordeaux. An opportunist second-half goal by Giorgos Karagounis handed Panathinaikos their berth while Inter Milan finished second in Group B after a 2-1 defeat at Werder Bremen, who secured a spot in the UEFA Cup last 32.Five-times winners Liverpool won Group D after coming from behind to beat PSV Eindhoven 3-1 and finish ahead of Atletico Madrid, who were held to a 0-0 draw at Olympique Marseille.Ryan Babbel, Albert Riera and David N'Gog struck for Liverpool after Danko Lazovic had given the home side brief hope of reaching the UEFA Cup knockout stage available to the eight third-placed teams.Barcelona, who had already won Group C, were beaten 3-2 at home by Shakhtar Donetsk after fielding an understrength side while also qualified Sporting Lisbon enjoyed a 1-0 success at Swiss side Base

The forwards wasted chances galore as India, despite dominating the proceedings settled for a 1-1 draw with Argentina in the second match of the four-Test Under-21 hockey series at the Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires.India dictated terms for most part of the match but could score only once through a solo by right winger Mandip Antil in the 44th minute.Argentina, to their credit, waged a grim battle and reward came in the 61st minute when Santiago Montelli scored the equaliser from a penalty stroke. The hosts began aggressively, trying to break the ice as their rivals took time to settle. They forced two penalty-corners in quick succession but while the first flick went wide, the second was well-intercepted by Indian custodian Mrinal Chaubey.India soon got their bearings and mounted sorties with regularity. They dominated the midfield and created openings around Argentina's semi-circle with crafty interchanges and off-the-ball running. However, they failed to find the target, especially with the goalkeeper Ezequiel Olivero doing a good job under the bar.A few attempts from forwards Danish Mujtaba, Jay Karan and Pramod Kumar missed the mark by inches. After his hat-trick in the first match, which the Indians won 3-2, a lot was expected from Diwakar Ram but the Indian captain was not on target either.Diwakar got at least three opportunities to sound the board but twice he flicked wide and was foiled once. After a goalless first-half, India continued their attacking mode and finally forged ahead when Mandip Antil was set up by central medio Vikas Sharma.Antil, a robust Haryana lad, forced his way into the striking circle, beating three defenders, before unleashing a rasping shot to the left of Olivero.India could have increased their tally but for failed deflections from flank cross-hits. Substitute Dharamvir Singh also missed a sitter to add to India's woes.Argentina, however, stepped up the pace towards the final phase and was rewarded with a penalty stroke after Agustin Cabrera was deliberately obstructed in a goalmouth melee.Santiago Montelli made no mistake from the spot.
Tennis News
Peace has broken out in Jelena Dokic's war of words with the Australian Open after she apologised for lashing the Grand Slam tournament when she was overlooked for a wildcard entry this year.Former world number four Dokic, who together with her firebrand father Damir has endured a rocky relationship with Australian tennis officials for years, most recently hit out over a perceived lack of support."I definitely think I deserved a wildcard into the main draw," she raged in January after being overlooked for the 2008 tournament. Sampras back in London and relishing life"I think I've done more in one week and had more big wins in one week than some of those girls have in their whole careers," she said of the unheralded recipients.Yugoslav-born Dokic also accused wildcard selectors of a conflict of interest. Some were involved in coaching candidates for the four free spots into the main draw.Dokic represented Australia until switching to Serbia and Montenegro in 2001 following a fall-out with her adopted nation, but then switched back to Australia in 2006.Back in Melbourne to play for a wildcard berth in the 2009 Open, however, Dokic is adopting a conciliatory tone."I have apologised to him [Open tournament director Craig Tiley] and Tennis Australia," she told reporters. "I made some remarks in January that were out of line."At the time I should not have said that."Dokic is competing in the Australian Open playoff from December 15-21. The men's and women's singles winners from the week-long event will gain wildcard entries into the year's first Grand Slam which begins on January 19.Dokic's ranking went into freefall and she dropped out of the world's top 600 after missing most of 2007. She resurrected her career this year, however, with three titles on the second-tier ITF circuit and has climbed back up to 179th.
